Mysterious Island by Jules Verne

The Mysterious Island tells the adventures of five Americans on an uncharted island in the South Pacific. A story of castaways, similar to Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, the story begins in the American Civil War, during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederate States of America. As famine and death ravage the city, five Northern prisoners of war decide to escape by the unusual means of hijacking a balloon. After flying in stormy weather for several days, the group crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, unknown (and fictitious) island. With the knowledge of the brilliant engineer Smith, the five are able to sustain themselves on the island, producing fire, pottery, bricks, nitroglycerin, iron, a simple electric telegraph, a home on a stony cliffside called “Granite House”, and even a seaworthy ship, which they name the “Bonaventure” (in honor of Pencroff, the driving force behind its construction). However, there is a mystery on the island in the form of an unseen deus ex machina, responsible for Cyrus’ survival after falling from the balloon, the mysterious rescue of Top from a dugong, the appearance of a box of equipment (guns and ammunition, tools, etc.), and other seemingly inexplicable occurrences. Only later do they find they have a hidden benefactor: Captain Nemo, of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, who resides, alone, secretly on the island. In time, the tiny colony becomes so prosperous that it is able to rescue another castaway from an island a hundred miles away. But all their work will come to naught – their island’s volcano is about to awake! The colonists, forewarned of the eruption by Nemo, find themselves safe but stranded on the last remaining piece of the island above sea level. Will they be rescued, or will all their struggles to survive and accomplishments be for naught?

North and South by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

North and South is set in the fictional industrial town of Milton in the North of England. Forced to leave her home in the tranquil rural south, Margaret Hale settles with her parents in Milton where she witnesses the brutal world wrought by the industrial revolution and employers and workers clashing in the first organized strikes. Sympathetic to the poor whose courage and tenacity she admires and among whom she makes friends, she clashes with John Thornton, a cotton mill manufacturer who belongs to the nouveaux riches and whose contemptuous attitude to workers Margaret despises. Thornton also happens to be a pupil, and good friend, of her father, so Margaret must strive to at least be civil when he comes to call at their home. As the novel continues Margaret grows in her understanding of the complexity of labor relations and their impact on well-meaning mill owners, and her conflicted relationship with John Thornton. At one point Thornton proposes to her, but she refuses him. Later, he sees her with her fugitive brother, whom he mistakes for another suitor, and this creates further unresolved conflict. Margaret, once she believes she has lost his affection, begins to see him in another light, and eventually they are reunited.

Old Granny Fox by Thornton W. Burgess

Old Granny Fox another great tale in the awesome series of children’s story-books about wildlife by master story-teller, Thornton W. Burgess.
Old Granny Fox and grandson Reddy Fox must use all their cunning and foxy-wiles to hunt up enough food to survive the long winter. The deep carpet of snow covering the Green Meadow has made food harder to find. She points out the fact that Farmer Brown’s hens are locked up tight and protected by Bowser the Hound, and instead takes a conceited Reddy hunting and teaches him some surprising new tricks to lure in their dinner. Old Granny and Reddy Fox encounter danger and adventure in their quests to keep their bellies full, including a close encounter with Farmer Brown’s boy, a clever plot to steal Bowser’s food, and an unforeseen thief who might outsmart this sneaky pair. "Please sir, I want some more," the famous line spoken by Oliver Twist at age nine, becomes the tipping point of a huge change in Oliver's life. He is soon captured into the service of Fagin and his gang of pick-pocketing boys. But, Mr. Brownlow saves him from arrest, and for the first time in his young life Oliver finds comfort and caring. Unfortunately, he is recaptured into the seedy and disgusting world he had escaped, and meets with Bill Sykes, a dangerous criminal. There are numerous delightful or wicked characters that carry the story along, such as the Artful Dodger-- a boy of the streets under Fagin, Mr. Bumble the Beadle, looking for ways to get rid of Oliver, Nancy who makes a fateful betrayal, and the Maylies, whose affection Oliver craves. The author's descriptions of the back street life in London, bring us full force into the crushing poverty and the terrible way in which poor people were treated during that time. Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist as a serial in 1837, and it is considered one of the most popular in English literature.

Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter

Pollyanna is the beloved classic tale of Pollyanna Whittier, a young orphaned girl who goes to live with her wealthy Aunt Polly after her father’s death. Pollyanna’s philosophy of life centers around what she calls “The Glad Game”, taught to her by her father: she always tries to find something to be glad about in every situation, and to always do without delay whatever she thinks is right. With this philosophy, and her unfailingly cheerful personality, she brings so much gladness to her aunt’s dispirited New England town that she transforms it into a pleasant, joyful place to live. When she tragically loses the use of her legs in an accident, even Pollyanna’s robust optimism is put to the test. She becomes isolated and depressed, believing that she has lost her innate happiness. The townspeople, so touched by her influence in their lives, rally to cheer her, and help bring her back to her sunny disposition.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

One of the most universally loved and admired English novels, Pride and Prejudice, is easily a favorite amongst the works of Jane Austen. Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five unmarried daughters and the parents’, especially the hovering, perpetually in a state of nerves mother’s attempt to marry their daughters well. Very soon into the book the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr. Darcy, have moved into their neighborhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth, both of them suffering from their own forms of pride and prejudices. Darcy, against all his norms, difference in social standing, family wishes for him, etc. , falls in love with her, only to be rejected when he proposes, due to her vast misjudgment of his true character. Over time she begins to see where she has been wrong, but can she learn to love him, will he still love her, can they both overcome all that has previously stood against them to make a happy life together? Austen’s unbeatable skill at writing weaves a tale with many enjoyable characters, delightful humor, suspenseful moments, and true and unmitigated love.

Rainbow Valley by Lucy Maud Montgomery

The seventh book in the Anne of Green Gables series, Rainbow Valley turns the focus to Anne and Gilbert’s children. Jem, sturdy and reliable, not a great talker but a good all-round student, he loves to investigate things, constantly experimenting and observing. Walter, has all his mother’s vivid imagination and love for beauty, he is thought of by the Glen St. Mary boys as girly because he never fights and rarely plays sports, preferring to read books alone, but his tender nature is endearing. Nan and Di, are the Ingleside twins. Nan has many friends, and is very lady-like, imitating her mother’s tricks, graces and poses. She also inherited her mother’s vivid imagination. Di, looks like her mother and favors her father in qualities and personality, having his practical bent and common sense, as well as his twinkling sense of humor. Shirley, is quiet and doesn’t like to be forced to talk, liking to play on his own. He is known as the little brown boy, because he has brown eyes, hair and skin. Rilla, the youngest, is very proud, hates to be teased or to be classed with lower people. She has silly beliefs and ideas, and a n overriding fear of being unladylike. The other main characters of the book are the four young Merediths, the somewhat neglected children of the new Presbyterian minister in town, as well as Mary Vance, an orphaned girl whom the children save from starvation and find a home for with Mrs. Marshall Elliott.

Rainbow Valley is sure to delight readers who love the works of L.M. Montgomery, as they come to know the  varied personalities and antics of the Blythe children and their friends!

Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

Taking place during the American Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage is the story of a young private of the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he longs for a wound, a “red badge of courage,” to counteract his cowardice. When his regiment once again faces the enemy, Henry takes courage and becomes one of the best fighters in his battalion as well as taking up the flag for his regiment as standard-bearer. The novel is known for its distinctive style, which includes realistic battle sequences as well as the repeated use of color imagery, and ironic tone. Separating itself from a traditional war narrative, Crane’s story reflects the inner experience of its protagonist (a soldier fleeing from combat) rather than the external world around him. With enduring ability to hold the reader’s attention The Red Badge of Courage still stands as a landmark of American fiction.

Rilla of Ingleside by Lucy Maud Montgomery

The eighth book in the Anne of Green Gables series, Rilla of Ingleside draws the focus once again to a singular heroine, now Anne and Gilbert’s youngest daughter Rilla, named after the beloved Marilla. Rilla, almost fifteen, is spirited, sweet, and full of life, with bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile, a most lovable and endearing character. On the cusp of heading out into the world, she can’t think any further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse, and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford, she hopes. But, there are much bigger things beyond her sight; there is a war going on, World War I, which will test the courage and maturity of the young, and change the lives of everyone forever.

Another great work from Montgomery, she successfully gives historical insight into what was done for the war efforts on the home front, how it affected those at home, and gives a view into how wartime affects the lives of all. Of course, as always, she draws you in with her characters and weaves a tale that is provoking, tearful, and delightful all at the same time.

Robin Hood by J. Walker McSpadden

One of the most well-known and best-loved characters in classic literature, the man who robbed from the rich to give to the poor, comes alive in these adventurous tales. This version of Robin Hood includes twenty-four tales of our beloved hero as he recruits his merry men, and the many adventures they have along the way: defying the brutality of the Sheriff of Nottingham, ruthless Prince John, and other authority figures in and around Sherwood Forest. Rarely included by most authors of Robin Hood tales, McSpadden includes Robin’s early life and later years, as well. The reader is given a good idea when the stories are set, and it is explained why Robin lives as an outlaw, which is a rarity in adaptations aimed at children. Lively episodes introduce each of the famous merry men and other colorful characters, including the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, lovely Maid Marian, and King Richard the Lionhearted.

Crusoe makes the best of the situation: lacking anything but knife, some tobacco, and a pipe he cleverly finds ways to feed, shelter, and clothe himself. His ardent wish is to escape his island – (why is it that the only people who come there are cannibals?!), but, he spends more than two decades in isolation before acquiring a sidekick – the man Friday you’ve probably heard of. In the year 1792, the French Revolution has reached its bloodiest stage. Aristocrats are being executed left and right by the Republic, when the guillotine begins to be cheated of aristocratic victims time and time-again, due to a series of daring rescues carried out by a mysterious hero known only as “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” Nothing is known about this person, save that he is a master of disguise, has saved dozens of lives, and has never been caught. He is the hero of the aristocrats, the bane of the Republic, and the talk of high society across the channel in England. As the absurd and foppish Sir Percy Blakeney, the leader of English fashion, puts it, “They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies seek him everywhere! Is he in Heaven or is he in Hell, that demmed elusive Pimpernel?” And no one is more interested in uncovering the mystery surrounding this hero than Sir Percy’s wife, the young French actress Marguerite St. Just, to whom the fate of the Scarlet Pimpernel may mean everything.

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen's first published novel, focuses on the lives and loves of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood, by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances. The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak and, in turn, encounter the sense and sensibility of life and love. Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss

The Swiss Family Robinson has delighted generations of readers with its exciting tale of a family which, though shipwrecked, displays remarkable resilience and ingenuity in making the best of what they’ve been dealt with. Trusting deeply in God, the family, a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, undertake to make a livable home, and provide for their needs, gathering and making use of all they can from the bounteous ship’s stores, as well as the natural abundance available on the island. Cut off from the comforts and companionship of other humans, they use a familiarity with natural history and biology to find the resources and build the tools to construct a canoe, weave cloth, irrigate a garden, and turn an immense hollow tree into a lofty house with a spiral staircase. They domesticate buffaloes, wild asses, and monkeys, as well as, establishing farms and plantations. Not wanting to keep things all peace and bliss, the author throws in a bit of adventure with encounters with terrifying creatures and an alarming run in with natives from a nearby island.

The years go by, the family comes to greatly love the life they’ve built on the island, founding a charming colony that later, they do not want to leave. The language of the book is charming and delightful, the tales colorful, creative, and exciting. A wonderful read from a time when family values were in the right place and believing in, living for, and praying to God was not faux-pas.
