Mary Lennox is a spoiled child born in India to wealthy British parents who never spend time with her. She is cared for by servants who do everything for her, and she becomes a spoiled and selfish child. After her parents die, she is brought to England to live with Archibald Craven, a rich uncle whom she has never met, at his isolated house, Misselthwaite Manor.
At first, Mary is as rude and sour as ever. She dislikes her new home, the people living in it, and most of all, the bleak moor on which it sits. However, a good-natured maid, Martha Sowerby, befriends Mary and encourages her to go out in the gardens of the estate and get some fresh air, saying it will do her good. While wandering the gardens surrounding the large property, Mary discovers a secret garden, surrounded by walls and locked, with a missing key. One day, with the help of two unexpected companions, she discovers a way in. Is everything in the garden dead, or can Mary bring it back to life? With the help of Dickon, Martha’s charming brother, who has a magical way with animals and nature, the children revive the old garden. With all the fresh air and time spent in the garden Mary begins to change, and come alive.
The garden is not the only secret of the manor, however. One night Mary follows the wails and strange cries she frequently hears, and discovers a cousin, Colin Craven, a sickly boy who has been kept in a hidden bedroom most of his life. Mary begins to visit him every day, distracting him from his troubles with stories of the moor, Dickon and his animals, and the secret garden. When she tells him about the secret garden, and Colin asks to see it. Colin is put into his wheelchair and brought outside into the secret garden. Time spent in the garden has a healing effect on the lad, and he learns to walk. It’s not only the children’s health that changes for the better, though. They blossom, and learn to love, losing their sour ways. A joyful reunion brings a happy ending to the story, which is the best way to end a book! A heart-warming story of rejuvenation, learning to truly live, and to love.
