Growing up on the banks of the Mississippi river, a mischievous boy named Tom Sawyer spends his days getting into one scrape after another. Tom’s constant cleverness, , trickery, and daring make him a handful to raise, and his Aunt Polly, who’s raising Tom, declares that she has “never seen the beat of that boy!” One of the most well known scenes in the book is when Tom is made to white-wash the fence after skipping school to go swimming. His cleverness comes into play and he convinces his friends to trade him small treasures for the “privilege” of doing his work, convincing them they don’t know what they’re missing out on with all the fun he’s having painting the fence!

Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, especially Becky Thatcher, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River. Tom is essentially good-hearted, in spite of his mischievous ways, but when he is witness to a horrible crime, his courage and integrity are tested beyond anything he ever expected.
